Runway Roundup: Alexander McQueen Fall 2010 RTW

In light of his untimely passing, I thought it would be only appropriate to give Alexander McQueen's final collection its own dedicated post. I'm sure you've probably already seen these looks all over the blogosphere, but they are so beautiful and McQueen will be so missed that I don't think anyone will mind seeing them again.

What I find so incredibly arresting and bittersweet about this collection is its focus on the ethereal. These pieces are rife not only with literal images of angels and demons (in digital reproductions of high-church illustrations and Heironymous Bosch originals printed onto the fabric) but with the saturated, gilded medieval richness of illuminated manuscripts and Byzantine religious paintings. Looking at these gowns, one has to wonder whether the concept of life and death was weighing heavily on McQueen as he designed this collection, so eerily apt are the heavenly references and the looks' focus on the light and beauty of the concept of the afterlife.

Truly stunning. McQueen was a talent the likes of which we may not see again for a very long time, and his presence in the fashion world which over the past decade he helped to shape will be sorely missed. We can only be thankful that his final collection made such an uplifting statement.

These looks are so decadent, I can't believe we'll never have another chance to see McQueen top himself.
