So, an insane storm has been beating the shit out of Southern California all week (seriously, my city is flooded!), and there's nothing like five straight days of gloom to make a gal long for spring weather...and spring outfits. To keep my spirits up (and to amuse myself during my commute home on the soggy, clogged freeway -- all those jokes about Californians being unable to drive in the rain are completely true), I've been conceptualizing my spring look.
For spring 2010 I want to introduce more color to my wardrobe while keeping everything in line with my aesthetic, so my plan is to stick with my palette of black, white, gray and navy and to add color through the use of prints. A concept I have for casual looks involves printed skirts and unusual tees. A little discordance will be encouraged. Here's my fantasy outfit for early spring:
1.) Blood Is The New Black's super cool, edgy tees are pretty much my ultimate jam for this concept -- I'm especially loving Josh Slater's creepy designs, which have a science fiction/ancient knowledge feel that reminds me of Iron Maiden album art. Since this tee's weird print is white on black, it's exactly what I'm wanting to pair with bright prints for spring. "Steps to the End" t-shirt, $36, Blood Is The New Black.
2.) I wear my cropped leather motorcycle jacket more than anything else I own, and I can promise you it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Fortunately this type of jacket goes with everything and makes everything look that much more badass. This one is super affordable in case you haven't added one to your wardrobe yet. Edgy leatherette jacket, $38.90, Heritage 1981.
3.) I'm not usually a fan of polka dots or florals or the color red, but oversized spots underneath big, bright lipstick-red roses have a really appealing pop-art feel. I'm kind of loving how the print looks paired with that Josh Slater tee -- it's just really working for me. Spot floral bodycon skirt, $50, Topshop.
4.) Nude is going to be go-to neutral color for accessories this spring, I can feel it. I already have a pair of taupe cut-out boots on their way to me, and next on my list are these truly perfect suede mega-platforms in the ideal shade of fleshy beige. "Victoria" platform pumps, $79.95, Bakers Shoes.
5.) Just really needing a pair of wear-with-everything silver studs (I'm wearing faceted glass or CZ right now, but I'm getting ready to move on from sparkle) and these cone studs are totally right. Noir Jewelry pyramid stud earrings, $25, Shopbop.
6.) I'm envisioning this outfit for March or April, and I wear scarves until May rolls around. I thought a chunky cable knit would be an interesting textural addition to this otherwise pretty sleek look, plus I'm just a little bored of all the fringed scarves I already wear. Cable runner scarf, $11.80, Forever 21.
7.) Really unusual rings are my favorite thing right now. I'm dying for both of these simple-yet-amazing silver pieces, which would look amazing worn stacked on top of each other or on separate fingers. Erica Weiner herkimer diamond solitaire ring, $100, Bona Drag; Species By The Thousands bobcat toe bone ring, $80, Supermarket.
8.) Reader Tara recommended Sula Paint & Peel polishes back in the comments of my beauty products post -- she likes them because they're formaldehyde-free, and swears she'll never use another brand again. I like them because peeling off your nail polish in one big strip seems infinitely satisfying, and this shade of browny-purply-gray is incredibly on-trend. Thanks for the heads up, Tara! Sula Paint & Peel nail polish in Slate, $9, Beauty Bridge.

I have been admiring that Topshop skirt for a few days now, I think you should get it! For spring, I'm really drawn to stripes mixed with florals, mesh inserts, and sorbet hues. So glad it has finally stopped raining!! Have a great and sunny weekend :)
Love this look and your new hair! The juxtaposition of the ladylike skirt and the edgy jacket are just perfect. The skirt reminds me of the rose print dress Eve Kendall wore in "North by Northwest."
Glad you like the Sula polish, too! This weekend I picked up their light green color (inspired by one of your posts) called Haze. Many compliments on it.
