Truthfully, Lucky isn't much good when it comes to clothes -- most of the worthwhile stuff that they feature is out of WR2BAM's league -- but it's consistently great for sussing out new beauty products and accessories. This month's issue was especially heavy on cool cosmetics I'm into trying out...
.) I wrote about Givenchy's Phenomen'Eyes mascara way back in my very first Lucky List and (much like Maybelline's Pulse Perfection did with Lancôme's motorized Oscillation mascara) L'Oreal has finally ripped off the sputnik-mascara-wand concept for us poor folk. Since I'm currently a Pulse Perfection user, I'm excited to give this stuff a try too. L'Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara, $8.99, drugstores.
.) You can thank Vena Cava, Doo.Ri, and Chanel's A/209 shows for the deep green nail polishes everywhere right now. I don't usually like shimmery polish, but this dark hunter green shade would be awesome on short nails for the holidays. Butter London 3 Free Lacquer in British Racing Green, $14, Butter London.
.) Michael Spirito of fine jewelry line Exhibitionist has done a low-priced collection called Rock & Redemption for (of all places) Sears. A lot of the stuff is kind of cheesy, but the simpler pieces are pretty decent, like these snake drop earrings. Rock & Redemption crystal accent snake dangle earrings, $49.99, Sears.
.) I don't wear red -- I just don't like it -- but this buffalo plaid shearling coat in a motorcycle cut is really appealing to me. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I grew up in a town whose university mascot was the Lumberjacks, but I suspect it's got more to do with how good this thing would look with black skinnies, boots, and my threadbare Mötley Crüe tee. BB Dakota "Mt. Tremper" jacket, $75, Fred Flare.
.) The ad for Sonia Rykiel for H&M got me pretty excited. From the lookbook photos, it looks like the H&M collaboration will be heavily inspired by the Resort collection -- they styled the models with fishnet ankle socks and everything -- so I'm stoked to check it out in February. Bonus: Rykiel and H&M are also doing a really sexy-looking lingerie collaboration that will show up in time for the holidays, hitting stores December 5. Sonia Rykiel for H&M, Holiday 2009 and Spring 2010.
.) Yurdan.com carries tons of ethnic imports, from rugs to ceramics to musical instruments, but their selection of jewelry is extensive and pretty awesome. These bohemian-feeling Turkish-made zamac rings come in a bunch of different styles are are less than ten bucks a pop -- I think I know what my posse is getting for Christmas this year. Turkish zamac rings, $6.80 each, Yurdan.
.) This new black lipcolor from Lipstick Queen is being marketed as "black lace stockings for your lips." It looks kind of scary in the tube, but goes on sheer, giving bare lips a slightly gothy vibe (which is good enough for me) -- and from the reviews I've read online, this product really shines when worn in conjunction with other lipcolors. It darkens light shades and helps dark shades stay put. I'm intrigued. "Black Tie Optional" lipstick, $18, Lipstick Queen.
.) My mom was an Estée Lauder devotee when I was growing up, so the brand already feels kind of nostalgic to me, and now they're re-releasing their classic scent Youth-Dew in a bottle styled after the original from the '50s. Called one of the sexiest fragrances ever created, Youth-Dew has floral top notes layered on top of spicy middle notes and musky bases (Moss! Vetvier! Patchouli!). In the vintage-style bottle, it's suddenly a must-have for me. Youth-Dew Eau de Parfum Spray in Classic Bottle, $28, Estée Lauder.
.) I don't really do eyeshadow (apart from the ocassional smudge of black on top of my black liner), but I'm always looking to expand my beauty repertoire, and this mottled cream eyeshadow appeals to me. I like that it mixes three different shades -- no blending required, just an easy sweep of chic, shimmery color. Rimmel London Stir It Up cream eyeshadow in No Way, $7, drugstores.
.) I have poor circulation so my feet are always cold, but I'm weird and haven't seen a pair of cheapy slippers that appealed to my aesthetic until now. These look cozy and warm and remind me of the shearling booties my parents used to wear around the house during chilly Flagstaff winters -- with a little edge, natch. Faux-fur trim slippers with studs, $14.99, Urban Outfitters.
