When it comes to heavy metal, nobody -- and I mean nobody -- touches Rob Halford. Since his band Judas Priest roared onto the music scene in 1974 with their debut album Rocka Rolla, Mr. Halford has been hailed as a true metal god. His voice is totally untouchable, and thanks to a healthy dose of dangerous spikes, studs, and leather, so is his style.
After decades of metal chicks wanting to "jump his bones" (check out this clip from the documentary Heavy Metal Parking Lot!), Halford came out of the closet in 1998. Suddenly a lot of Judas Priest songs took on a whole new meaning -- "Hell Bent For Leather" or "Turbo Lover," anyone? -- and so did Rob Halford's S&M leather-daddy style. I often wonder if gay culture influenced heavy metal style through Rob Halford's dress, or if it was the other way around. Either way, his iconic take-no-prisoners fashion sense is one for the ages, and worth copping when you want to project a "don't mess with me" image.
Here's my selection of Rob Halford-inspired looks with a little feminine edge:
.) Get cuffed without breakin' the law with this gold handcuff necklace from Patricia Field ($18).
.) This tough-but-cute cap-sleeve biker jacket from Topshop (£120/$224) is enough to make anyone hell bent for leather.
.) Rob regularly sported a classic motorcycle cap. Keep your look similarly badass with this wool button cadet cap from Urban Outfitters ($24).
.) Don't be afraid to mix your (heavy) metals -- pair this gold studded biker cuff ($6, Fred Flare) with rough silver hardware for a look that's both luxe and hard.
.) This silver clutch by Patricia Field ($25) adds a glam touch to a rock 'n roll look.
.) Halford is often seen sporting S&M-style leather gloves -- these sexy little half-gloves ($48, Patricia Field) are a feminine take on the style.
.) Look closer: the silver piping on this skirt ($32, Twelve By Twelve) is actually zippers. The metal gods would approve.
.) Strap on these bestudded platform Mary Janes ($10.99, Forever 21) when you wanna go hot rockin'.
.) It's a little cheeky, but don't you think Rob would approve of the shape of Jean Paul Gaultier's Fleur du Male cologne ($54 for 2.5 oz, Sephora)?
.) Tarina Tarantino's skull cross necklace ($63) would be sure to get conservative parents up in arms, just like Judas Priest's records did back in the '80s.
.) These shoulder-sweeping dagger metal earrings ($4.80, Forever 21) don't just look sharp.
.) This cropped jacket from Twelve By Twelve ($58) is more sparkly than studded, but pair it with some dangerous accessories for diamonds-and-rust-style juxtaposition.
.) It's more comfortable than a corset, but the shape of this strapless knit top ($12.50, Forever 21) still has a dominatrixy feel.
.) Rob Halford is rarely seen onstage without a plethora of studs -- wrap this 3-row English cone stud belt from Angry Young & Poor ($22) around your waist for a similar aura of total toughness.
.) This leather studded crossbody bag ($125, Urban Outfitters) looks good whether you're out during the day or livin' after midnight.
.) Skinny black jeans ($27.80, Forever 21) are the quintessential rock 'n roll accessory.
.) Hook this leather tassel from Topshop (£6/$11) onto pretty much anything for an instant shot of Halford style -- it's more portable than a bullwhip, and chicer, too.
.) These flat fringed boots ($99.95, Steve Madden) are exactly what you'll want to pull on when you're ready to head out to the highway.
