A Marc Jacobs top is enough to make the most sensible girl swoon. Such is the case with this MJ cotton/silk blend printed "Ottoman" tunic, above right. Adorable flap pockets and boat neck aside, it's the big graphic print that really catches my eye. But to the tune of $1,050.00, it's just not a possibility. Still, all it takes is a little searching to find a similar piece for a fraction of the cost.
Above left is a colorblock tank from Forever 21. Sure, it's obviously not as fabulous as the Marc tunic, but the abstract swirly print and babydoll shape are reminiscent, and at $15.80 it's 1/66th of the cost. Imagine it with super skinny black jeans, a denim jacket, and some really killer heels -- maybe in coral, to set off that diagonal line? -- and suddenly it's looking pretty fabulous in its own right.
Other places to seek out bold, graphic prints: it's worth it to dig through those sometimes off-putting, super-cheap fashion stores you pass by in shopping centers and malls. There's probably at least one in your town -- check near your local Target; that's where they seem to like to hide out. At first glance it might just look like a lot of clubwear, but if you dig you're often rewarded with fun, brightly patterned pieces for hardly any money at all. The same goes for swapmeet clothing stands!
Also, keep your eye out in vintage and thrift stores and on Ebay for vintage pieces by Pucci, Biba, and Halston. They'll cost a little more, but you'll be the proud owner of a truly covetable designer piece, and it'll still be a fraction of the price of a new high-end dress or top.
