When it comes to personifying effortless, bohemian chic, nobody has ever done it quite like folk goddess Joni Mitchell. In the 1960s, as the regining queen of hippie musicians' Utopia, Laurel Canyon, Joni practically created the style of her culture without ever even seeming to try. Even today, Joni makes it look easy, but the rest of us mortals might need a little help.

.) Her loose, long locks are usually free-flowing, but 1960s pictures of Joni with her beau Graham Nash show her in a crochet beret much like this one from Forever 21, proving that even rock stars have bad hair days.
.) Earthy tones calm down a psychedelic print, making this Twelve By Twelve dress fit for Don Juan's reckless daugher.
.) These silver bangles from Urban Outfitters are simple enough to go unnoticed, but the engraved floral details add a bohemian feel.
.) Joni started smoking when she was nine years old. Not that I'm advocating such extremes, but should you feel inspired to emulate her, Joni chain-smokes American Spirits and probably uses a gorgeous engraved silver lighter like this one from Zippo.
.) Frye equestrian boots are a classic that work equally well in Canada, New York, and Los Angeles.
.) Joni rarely wears much jewelry, but when she does, it's straightforward but with special, subtle details, like these wood-and-filigree earrings from Heritage 1981.
.) Ms. Mitchell taught herself to play guitar when she was a teenager, but it's never too late to try something new. This Daisy Rock Butterfly acoustic guitar, made of beautiful bubinga wood and featuring butterfly inlays on the headstock, is a gorgeous instrument to start learning on.
.) Bare-faced is best when it comes to folk chic, but a little lipcolor, like Kiehl's lipgloss in Pear Tree, goes a long way.
.) "Bohemian style" might bring to mind elaborate embellishments, but Joni tends to steer clear of frippery in her clothes. This simple cotton blouse from American Eagle Outfitters has just the right amount of detail.
.) When channeling Joni or any other folk icon, you run the risk of coming off too hippie-dippy. Weigh down soft '60s looks with a hefty, modern bag like this designer-inspired leather purse from Shop Suey.
.) Maybe Joni wouldn't have worn these peacock feather earrings from Fred Flare, but I'm willing to bet at least some of the ladies of the Canyon would swoon over them.
.) A sweet embroidered blouse from Urban Outfitters conveys a flower-child sensibility. The slim shape and unfussy neckline keeps it from going over the top.
.) Look up pictures of Joni -- if she's in jeans you can bet they're high-waisted and wide-legged, like this pair from Forever 21.
.) This engraved silver bangle from Girl Props has an ethnic feel and adds a little bohemian glamour to a casual ensemble.
.) In the '60s, Joni went without a stitch of makeup. If you're brave enough to bare your face to the world, prep it first with a toning spray like Ole Henriksen's African Red Tea Face Mist.
.) Joni's long hair and Jane Birkin-esque bangs always look stick-straight and super shiny. John Frieda's Brilliant Brunette Runway Straight smoothing milk will help you fake it.
.) Warm summer days in Los Angeles call for barely-there sandals with a handcrafted feel, like this pair from Urban Outfitters.
